A little dance can't hert =).
After you get Windows configured and accaully boot up for the first time, you may consider doing another dance =). When you are done dancing, first install any anti-virus software you have if it's not already installed. There is no need for a virus scan since you have not connected to the internet yet but some scanners may require this as a baseline.
After you are done with this, connect you laptop to the internet and run Windows Updater. It is important to keep your computer running all the latest updates.
Then, go ahead and install any programs that you need (Office, Firefox, etc.). To keep your computer running quickly, defragment your hard drive after you have installed everything.
To do this:
-Open "My Computer"
-Right click on your hard drive
-Click on "Properties"
-Go to the "Tools" tab
-Click "Defragment Now..."
-Click on the hard drive with the most stuff on it (click the only 1 if thats all you have)
-Click "Analyze"
-When thats done click "Defragment"
-Analyze then defragment all other hard drives.
What that did was move pieces of information that are similar closer to each other on your hard drive so that when you run a program, all the files that need to be read are close to each other on your disk so the hard drive doesn't have to spend time moving between one location on the disk to another.

In most cases they install tons of stuff you don't need. Your first step should be to uninstall all of that. Then install RegCleaner to fix any problems that may have been created in the registry from this. You then should install anti-virus software as well as adaware. Run all of these and also make sure to check your specs, wouldn't want you getting ripped off :P
While these processes are running, DANCE!!! just um...make sure not to knock any liquids on to your laptop, knock it off the desk, etc...
:D

While starting up the computer do a little dance. Then when it is ready to go, get your antivirus updates and set it all up. Then get your microsoft updates and then from there check the specs.

Download the critical freebies:
* Firefox
*CCleaner
*Open Office
*Notepad++
*Instant Messenger of choice
*VideoLAN client
Then, go change your desktop theme, your preferences, and your startup (Run msconfig) to only be running the essentials.
Then, if you like (and are going to be running Vista) go to the Control Panel, User Accounts, User Accounts, Disable User Account Control. Only do this if you're tech-savvy and know what to do and not do on your PC.
Those are just some of my basics I do when I get a new PC / reformat. Enjoy. :)
