You forget Turkey is deathly afraid of the Kurds uniting and forming a new country with parts of Turkey and Iraq. There would be mass murder if the Kurds were left to control the Sunni's. The blood feud between each of those groups goes back centuries.

Kurds are a minority in Iraq, they wouldn't be able to handle the Sunnis. You are basically saying we should just leave Iraq to battle it out. As much as we all depise Saddam, as a leader he really set the tone for Sunnis. They are some dedicated individuals. Look at all of the massacres and terrible days in Iraq and its always Sunnis bombing Mosque or mudering hundreds of Shi'a at a religious event. We can't leave because Sunnis would just take it over and we have a Iraq/Iran situation. Right now the Sunnis are the most powerful sect in Iraq, what is the US to do now? We ****** the middle east and gave birth to a demon.

Turkey would never have it. They would the first target of the newly-armed Kurds.
The problem is we are trying to impose a 20th century solution - pluralistic democracy - on 14th century minds. The Middle East has precious few natural boundaries, so each ethnic and religious group has had to fight like Hell for thousands of years to maintain their own identity, and they're all crammed like sardines together. Spend 15 minutes in Los Angeles with Iranis or Armenians and you will see what I mean - they don't think their sh*t stinks, and they have NO concept of tolerance.
As I see it, we have two options. Secure the oilfields and pipelines, then arm both sides and let them kill each other, or develop alternative energies real quick and tell them to @#$% off. Playing nice will not work.

The Kurds are happy forming their own nation in the oil rich north. They don't want any part in the Sunni-Shiite conflict. I really don't understand why the US just doesn't give them full autonomy in Northern Iraq. They are already fairly stable, and don't really mind our presence. They are also in a very strategic location.

Because Iran will be arming the Shites, and if the Shites take over all of Iraq, we may have another Iran to deal with.

I dunno if it is brilliant spin or factual data but it seems that Taliban has been acting up for years. I do not understand Taliban or there dogma or whatever, they want power and taxes that go with it like every other politico, give politicians there own country, sticks and duct tape and leave them alone.
