Some great answers here already. But really, what is any animals purpose.
The elephants purpose may have something to do with its environment. It eats a lot. It poops a lot, spreading around the things that it has eaten. Dung Beatles love the elephants.
It knocks down trees, and scares away predators, and when it dies, it becomes a large meal.

There is no "purpose" to any life. Elephants help recycle free energy at the surface of the earth. The energy they recycle is energy that none or few other animals recycle, so they fill that niche. if they all died, some other animals would do so.

This is not a valid question. It implies that an
organism has some role to play in the cosmic
scheme of things, an idea for which there is no
evidence whatever. What is the purpose of
human beings? They have none, except the
purposes they create for themselves.
