I have someone that I have a souring relationship with that tells me that she can trace my laptop pc through my ISP, that she got through an email I sent to her. She is a very talented computer expert, and could totally destroy my pc. How can I protect my laptop? I have clearwire wireless internet. Thanks.

I am not knowledgable with computers (obviously). Is it only through e-mail that someone can destroy a pc? If I never use that e-mail on this pc again, will that offer protection?

Well FYI, anytime you get an email from someone, you can get the header and there is a program to get the ISP, location where the email was sent, and stuff like that. Anyone can do that.

Besides the usual firewall, have a program like Norton's Anti-Virus running. What this will do is scan mail you open and send so no one can put any kind of virus, trojan, or keylogger program on there without you knowing. Then beware of strange mail and do not OPEN up.

And if anything else, just change your ID if you are so worried. You can notify all the important people and sites of your new ID.

Heres what you do: If you have the ability to add WEP which is wireless security between your laptop and your cable modem usually set in a router, set it to on and use a password to connect wirelessly to your router. Then, if you have a firewall builtin to your router, set it to very restrictive and only keep open what you need to function. If not, install a software firewall (zonealarm works well) and set it the same way. Then, call your broadband company and ask them to change your static ip address to something else because you believe someone gained access to your system. They usually do this for free (i've had cox do it just cuz). After all that she still gets in, take her to court and show proof that you had all these things in place and she still got in. that will show deception, deceit, malicious intent, and they'll really burn her.

Oh and i highly doubt she can trace your exact laptop by way of an email. even with the headers, your isp usually conceals it from view. even they'd have trouble locating you, although they do know your ip address cuz its in their records. Most likely she is saying that to scare you, i wouldnt be worried.

First go here and download & install a firewall.

That will protect her from accessing your pc from a remote location assuming she has your ip address. If you have dial-up-access your ip address will change every time you call in.If it's cable or dsl you have a static ip address and it will stay the same.. Either way with a firewall she cannot gain entry into your pc and steal your information!
