What's a good newberry book for a book report?

While I would essentially agree that Newbery winners are 'good' books worthy of winning the award and gaining the recognition, that isn't *always* the case. It's hard for anyone to actually agree what *one* book is the best published that year. And there have been some truly unremarkable and forgettable titles who have won the award. That being said, I absolutely LOVED this year's honor books. Penny From Heaven by Jennifer Holm is great and I loved Hattie Big Sky by Kirby Larson. I could live without HIGHER POWER OF LUCKY though...there were much better books out there to choose from.

Depending on your interests you might like:
Holes by Lois Sachar
Kira-Kira by Cynthia Kadohata
Crispin by Avi
The Giver by Lois Lowry
Number the Stars by Lois Lowry

It's Newbery with one "r".

Get the list here:

They are all the best of the best, that's why they won the award. It isn't given lightly. There are between 5000 and 10,000 books for children published every year. You can see from the list that less than five, sometimes only one or two are honored.

Look up a few titles in Amazon and read the descriptions. Some are historical fiction, some are fairy tales. You should find one that fits the type of book you like.

The Black Cauldron by Lloyd Alexander, it's a classic, it's great at nearly any age.
Also...
The Giver by Lois Lowry
Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson
Number the Stars by Lois Lowry
Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli

I can remember reading all these as a kid. There are many others, but these, in my opinion, are the best. They're all great. Find one that sounds good to you.
