This all depends on the approach you want to take. When I have a nice open and "free" project like this, I like to surprise everyone and do something really morbid, like serial killers. Bloody Benders...a family if you wikipedia them, you will get a good lead, they also fir the time criteria. Or you could go with the general George Washington, or Robert E. Lee. Possibly look into some musicians, like Duke Ellington, which would be a great idea, in the sense that it is easy to connect to today as far as the "snowballing" and transformation of music.
