Don't compare Russia and China.
China still religiously honors the man that killed 70 million people.

the first two answers are both wrong.. well partly, the first responder is right when he says that communism has never truly existed, but it does not by default become socialism.. Socialism is a way of integrating communistic tenants while maintaining trade with the capitalist world... it is in essence a hybrid...
Communism if practiced truly is an equality based social system.. it never is fulfilled, it is always co-opted by the right and used as a totalitarian front... fact.
Socialism again is practiced in greater and lesser degrees around the planet with much success... most people are very confused about both of these philosophies. As an American that has spent time abroad I can tell you that socialism works quite well and creates a much happier and better cared for public... Communism has yet to be realized, truly.
Communism is not the enemy of Democracy it is the enemy of Capitalism .. and as Americans we live in a republic that supposedly practices representative democracy... but not really. It is a socialized republic bordering on a totalitarian police state...
doubt this? Go to the Capital building and walk around with a sign that says " Socialism for change" and see how quickly you get escorted out of the building.

The difference between socialism and communism is that under socialism, the means of production and provision are in state control. Under communism, the state eventually erodes.
China is an totalitarian socialist oligarchy.
True communism will never exist in practice. It's against human nature.

Communism is a utopian theory that has never truly existed. Governments that purport to be communist are, in practice, socialist.

the simplest explanation is: Communism takes what it wants by force. Socialism works with in the system to effect the change they want. They both have the same goals just different ways of getting to them
