either of the 500's, you will get bored of the 250 really quick. honestly a 600 is perfectly manageable as a first bike as long as you ride within your limits

Im a standard kinda guy for those that want advice on startin up and trying to stay up 'n balanced. The 250 is sharp, no doubt but the 500 has a lot going for it too. I would say that the maint cost would be what sways u. Everything should be cheaper with the 250, insurance, tires, battery, cables, lights. etc. 500-faster, 250-wannabe liter sport but will get u in the twisties better than the 500. ur choice.

Go pick up a used Ninja 250 that you can lay down a couple of times and not worry about massive plastic and stuff.

You're going to bite it...everyone does sooner or later. And beginners will for sure.

The Ninja 250 is smaller, but it's forgiving, has decent power (I can get my son's to 100Mph on the highway) and if you get a used one, it holds its value pretty well. That way when you get tired of the Ninja (and you will) and want to progress to a larger bike, you can get most of what you spent when you sell it.

If it was my kid, I'd get him to ride the 250 for one season till his skills were somewhat honed before going on to a larger bike.

Later, after you have built up some skill, go for the larger bike. And you'll know more of what you like and feel good with if you wait too.

I'd recommend the 500 or either the Kaw or Suzuki. You'll be bored with a 250 in a week. At least the 500 will give you a year to practice and get confident before you venture on to bigger bikes.

a ninja 250 is an excellent choice as a first bike, get some miles and hours under your belt then you can get a bigger bike if you want to, plus the 250 is cheap even new it's about 3000.....and it will hit 100 mph that's more speed than you'll need.
