Well - depends a bit on the particular time frame. For a while there, it was both safer and more fun to be a gladiator than an emperor. Usually, though, I'd choose to be the emperor. Think of all the options an emperor had, compared to a gladiator!

An emperor doesn't sound like such a bad gig, that is if you can be sensible and rule unselfishly so that your people don't want to revolt and assassinate you.

So yeah, I'll take the gladiator gig. Wait then I have to fight for my life against really bad odds over and over until I die or am given freedom. Hmmmm.

Emperor it is, I would just take the hottest female servants with me and go into exile and let someone rule in my place and do my best to enjoy life being filthy rich. Treasure Bath!!!

Emperor. At least then when you get killed, it will be by poison or just being stabbed in the heart, instead of being mauled to pieces by lions.
