you had me thinking here, let's see...respect is something you give out to someone you know did many great things amidst true hardships in life, esteem is like how you rate yourself from the respect they showed you, the only difference i could think of is, respect is what you deserve having after an ordeal that you might not know while esteem, though well deserved inhibits pride and egocentricity which also tends to be more on the negative side of things..did i help?
...hey thanks for the lyrics, just an ordinary song, you made my day, not really a fan of janno gibbs so i didn't know, searching high and low is only a euphemism i use when i want things done asap, hehehe. but really, thanks..

It basically a level of how much you think of or admire a person and why. Esteem is a much higher level than respect.

We show our elders and people in authority respect because of their age or position.

We have high regard or esteem for an individual based upon something he did or does.

I respect my dad, he's a great role model.
I have high self esteem because I was raised in a family that accepted me.

Respect is something you earn, or give to someone.
Esteem is something you have or hold someone to.
