Oral would be 98.6 F, but you can't really take a baby's oral temperature. At four weeks of age, you should be taking the baby's temperature rectally. The temperature would be one degree higher, so 99.6 F would be normal for a rectal baby temperature.

"normal" oral temp is always 98.6 but that may not be normal for your baby. You may find that he always runs a little high or a little low. I believe at that age doctors like to hear from you if temp is over 99 to 100. Call the dr and talk to your nurse. Ask her at what temp should you come in/call back.

You can not getting a normal temp orally from a baby this young. You can place the thermometer under his arm or better yet go purchase an ear thermometer. Here is an article that goes in depth on how to take your babies temperature as well as what temperature is normal.

I find taking your baby's temp under his arm is the easiest even though rectal is the "most accurate" for me my now 7week old son would not let me stick the thermometer near his bottom. he would tighten his little butt so tight i couldn't even do that to him i felt bad lol... so i stuck with under his arm.
but anyways the doctor told me anything under 98.5 for a newborn you need to wrap him and hold close to you to bring his temp back up. and anything over 100.00 go to your doctor/urgent care/ or the emergency!!

take care & god bless.

try a cool bath and baby tylenol (i think i mispelled that sorry) before calling your doctor

an oral temp is not accurate, the best is the rectum, i know it sounds bad but it's true. if the rectum temp is 100.4 or higher than he has a fever. i had a baby back in september and went through that. God bless you and your baby and good luck
