I have news for you there not a whack job as you say .Most Windows operating systems are unstable and if you think three months is a good test of stability ,its not.The best operating systems Windows ever produced are Windows 95 and Windows 2000 but even there not as stable as Apple or Linux based operating systems. The trouble with Windows is it just happens so quick and most times you don't have all your files and software burned to discs and you lose a lot.I agree Windows XP is a major improvement over past operating systems but you have the option of either fat32 or ntfs file systems so if someone uses fat they may have the same old problems as past operating systems.Although Windows is much easier to use and has much more software available so that is an advantage.Just be careful and burn all important documents and software to disc so if your PC does crash you will have backup files and software.

While I have always considered myself a sort of 2000 Loyalist, I do take exception to the endless patching of XP Home. The reason 2000 is my preferred Win OS is that it has been out so long, there have been enough patches to complete it. Vista, as is any new Win OS, a joke right now. Just wait another couple of years, then I will tell you what I think of Vista. I do agree with you on your point about firewalls and virus scanners. Most people are too lazy or ignorant to get some free software like ClamWin or AVG and run it. However, you can only help out an incomplete OS like XP or Vista so much.

It is not Windows XP (like you have) that has stability issues. It is the just released and new Windows Vista that everyone is talking about being unstable. The stability problems people are having with Vista have nothing to do with, if you have a high end PC or not, it has everything to do with Vista being so new that there are still many software programs and drivers still not working with Vista and the many people out there who are very angry have every right to be. Many computer companies are slapping together computers without even testing to see if Vista is working with the hardware they threw in. In turn people are getting a nightmare.

It is true, if you take care of your computer you will be fine. However, just because you don't get to the point of crashing doesn't mean it is stable.
I use Windows more than anything else ONLY because it supports more than the other operating systems. If any others weren't useless for my needs I would switch in two seconds.
I hate to say it, but in fact Windows is the most unstable OS in the world, but everything else is pointless until they can do everything Windows can.

windows 2000 pro is much more stable, I've had it running on one machine for over 3 years, but the problem with most windows versions is security, if you set windows up to run like linux or mac's you'd never run as administrator, only as a limited user, that way thered be a whole lot less security problems with windows..

Stability is measured by continuous tests and comparing to other operating systems. Obviously, Windows did not score as high as others. Just remember, it's the average.

I agree, Windows is the bomb. I loved XP pro, now moved on to Vista. Have not had any problems with it at all. My XP cpu was very simuliar to what you have, never any problems with it, I was sad to see it go, but I wanted a new PC and it came with Vista, I say, let Windows keep doing what they are doing. Keep them safe, keep them clean and have no worries.
