Is anger really "just" a cover for other emotions or can you just be angry?

angst is a deep seated anxiety. Anxiety could result if anger has to be suppressed and conflict can't be resolved. But anger would be an unlikely cover for anxiety--you can just be angry for good cause.

Angst is: A feeling of anxiety or apprehension often accompanied by depression.

Anger is: A strong feeling of displeasure or hostility

I don't see where you make the connection but I guess someones anger could be their reaction to other feelings, that they may not even understand themselves.

But the dictionary meaning though they might be mistaken one for the other in real life terms is totally different.

Maybe the problem is with the context of the situation and the predisposition of the observer, and his or her interpretation of the reaction, rather then with the reaction itself.

What I mean is maybe you are reading it wrong. If you know this person very well, you should be able to differentiate between anxiety & hostility? Assuming you know what prevoked it? I can only assume that you don't?

Angst is a feeling of anxiety or apprehension often accompanied by depression. In this sense it is often maudlin.

Anger is a strong feeling of hostility. One can certainly just be angry. There is usually a cause for the anger but the expression of hostility is anger itself.
