Did anybody else also tear a backboard down, whether it's in college or the NBA?

if ur talking about shattering the glass...no. darryll dawkins did it a couple times when he played for the sixers. i also remember darvin ham and bryant 'big country' reeves spider-webbing the glass in the season before each were drafted....1995 i believe?
but now if ur talking about bringing the WHOLE backboard down and not just breaking the glass, shaq did that twice. once against phoenix i believe where the basket support folded up like an accordian after his dunk and the other where he ripped down the backboard and the shot clock grazed his head when it was coming down.

Yes. Darryl Dawkins made a career out of destroying backboards.

THE only one that brought the backboard down was him(two times).But Darryl Dawkins broke the glass twice.Ham broke the glass in college.

its happened before, they created them differently to keep the backboards from shattering like they did a number of times in the 70s and 80s...acrylic glass would be flying all over...Daryl Dawkins shattered two (the first one shattered real bad,the second one the rim detached from the backboard in a small spot, he was funny, would name his dunks like lyrics from a parliment/funkadelic jam) but they made a huge mess and stopped play ...they re-engineered them not long after that, first with the spring loaded rim, then the one they currently play with...but yeah, a few players have stopped play ruining the backboard or support stanchions...
