When we got her as a tiny puppy (she still is a puppy) she found one of our acts and they have been buddies ever since. But we think that her cat buddy got scared (He is super shy, and scared) and ran away.

About the dog being depressed all you can do is give him plenty of love. When my dog died my one cat (who actually used to fight with the dog) all of a sudden became very clingy so we give her lots of attention and love and let her know everything is gonna be ok.

How long has your cat been missing? I used to tell my dog to find the kitty and she would hunt around the yard until she found her (my yard is many acres). If it hasn't been that long you may try putting your dog on a leash and seeing if she can find her. Being a puppy that might not work but it's worth a try.
Otherwise put up flyers and contact the animal shelters. I saw a recent poll that said most people just assume a cat they find is a stray and has no home. He may still turn up.
The puppy will get over it with lots of attention. Incidently, my cat still moans and rubs against the stuffed dog toy I kept even though my dog has been gone over ten years now.

the dog being depressed doesn't sound uncommon. Especially if the two of them were connected. I have this problem with two of my horses that cannot be out of sight of each other, or else they freak and someone gets hurt. Best advice: find the cat.

Spoil the dog give him lots of love , Maybe introduce a new kitty to him or her see if you can get him a new buddy.

my dog and cat are like best friends too, and whenever we even put him outside for a while to go potty buster (my dog) just lays around lol
