I am not Japanese (actually, I'm from the US, living in Asia), but I asked my Japansese friends. They said they were not aware that Japanese are known for sleeping only 6 hours per night. They did mention that many businessmen are often required to have dinner and drinks with their boss after work and this can run into midnight or so. they also told me that many students stay up very late doing their homework (unlike kids in the US), so many of them cannot get more than 6 hours sleep.

However, most Japanese, like the majority of people everywhere, really need an average of about 8 hours of good sleep (including several hours of REM sleep). I know of no medical studies which show that Japanese need less sleep.

According to a NHK (a major TV station in Japan) survey conducted in 2000, the average sleep time for Japanese is seven hours and half, wth those in their 30s and 40s sleeping just under seven hours per night. On the other hand, in another survey, 41 % of those polled said that they sleep less than six hours a day.

My personal impression is that most Japanese sleep or al least prefer to sleep 7 hours or more, while there are indivisuals who require less. But many (students, businessmen, working mothers) don't get to sleep that long just because they have too much to do. Many make up for the lack during the weekend.

Monday through Thursday I sleep six hours each night...weekends usually about 7 to 8. I am American. Some people like me, just don't require much sleep. I am sure some Japanese only sleep for six hours!

Depends on the person. I work in a Junior High school in Japan and the teachers stress the importance of sleeping at least 8 hours a night.

I once read somewhere (and really wish I knew where) that....

There are more differences within a culture than between them.

Every culture would have people that do and don't sleep 6 hours a day.

Even personally, there are times when I sleep more and less.

So, I guess the answer would be... yes and no.

Some do. If you have to get up early for a 2 hour comute and 2 hours home....plus a bit of overtime...say 3 hours....you have little time for a long snooze.
