Multimedia means less dirent relience on other human beings for stimulation.
Popular culture idealizes the "player" lifestyle, being openly sexually active but avoiding relationships is seen as favorable.
Whether it is truly necessary or not, young people today are being encouraged to believe that absolute financial independence of one's own is required before considering marriage. It is generally considered truth that both partners will be expected to contribute equal incomes in modern family systems, so young people are given a much greater emphasis on developing ones career at the expense of everything else, including establishing (non-casual) romantic connections.

Hmm off the top of my head....

-Later average age of getting married=More single people for longer in their lives

-Changing social norms that make not getting married/settling down with someone/being attached to someone more socially acceptable than in the past

-Lack of connection between individuals in larger centers, with a faster pace of life etc....

-Greater female independence (they don't HAVE to get hook up with a guy long-term to survive)

-Greater emphasis on personal autonomy

I'm sure that people will disagree with some/all of them but that's all that I can think of off the top of my head ;).

Like the first answer said...fewer people are settling. Fewer people are getting married just because society tells them they should.

And, there are more divorces hence more singles.

Because they have seen so much unhappiness in other peoples relationships that they do not want to experience the sadness.
