Haha, great question.
As I don't know how long you're spending in Taipei, I'm going to provide a list of places to see and things to do!
I also recommend checking my 360 blog as I have plenty of pictures of Taipei and Taiwan.
Things to see:
1. Go and have a look at the Taipei 101, take the lift to the top - the lift is extremely smooth and fast! I recommend going at 5pm (this way you can see the day view, sunset, then the night view).
2. Check out Taipei Main Station, underground there are miles of street stalls selling all sorts of things - a great place to pick up cheap gifts and souvineirs. Above ground you can check out many stores selling high-tech stuff!
3. National museaum Gu-Gong-Bo-Wu-Yuan, this is Taiwan's largest museaum and is indeed the largest and richest collection of Chinese artifacts and paintings in the world! It's located in the suburbs of Taipei.
4. Night-Markets: in my opinion, they make Taipei the city it is. Try Shih Ling (the biggest). Another 2 great ones are Rao He nightmarket and Tong Hua nightmarket. Try a watermelon juice or a pearl milk tea! Shui Jian bao (dumplings) are great as well. In fact I'd recommend anything - except the smelly dofu (you'll smell it when you pass it).
5. YangMing mountain, this time of year you can see the Sakuras blossom - check my blog! It takes an hour by buss - from Taipei main station and is great. If you want to go to the top of Yangming mountain (qi xing san) then the whole trip will take about half a day. if you want to go to the top - make sure you take plenty of water - but besides that you won't need any specialist equiptment!
6. Go to ZhongXiao don lu - if you want to see all the departement stores.
7. Ximen Ding is a cool place where many fashionable youngsters hang out - you'll also be able to find a lot of manga/ anime stuff here (just like underground Taipei main station).
8. Dan shui - is at the end of the metro line, is a riverside promenade with lots of stores, places to eat and see - worth seeing.
Places to eat:
1. You must try Dim Tai Fung - there's one branch on Xing-Yi road, an other is located in ZhongXiao Don Lu - they do dumplings, steamed buns and other traditional snacks - all fantastic.
2. The night markets of course.
ZhongXiao Don-Lu area has plenty of restaurants!
I can give you much more specific details - all you need do is contact me through my 360 space or via yahoo!
Either way have a great time in Taipei!

depends on what you want or what you like. basically, night markets are the best place to buy cheap items, street foods are not bad too... try their "chow tow fu"... u can take the mrt & go to "si men ting", chong hua rd, wan hua where they also have an alley where they kill the snake & drink its blood.
