what is this thing and what is it supposed to do. i think its where the noise may be coming from. sounds like an exhaust leak.

Thats a cold air intake system.... a couple different companys sell them on ebay... it's just a chrome tube with the conical air filter on it. It lets your engine suck in more air.... you should hear some noise when you step on the gas.

it is a cold air intake and leave it on. It will and does give you better gas miledge and better performance. just make sure all vacum lines are hooked up properly. and as far as the filter is concerned as lnog as it is a k&n or comparable foam filter it will outlast the truck,just make sure it is clean
