I was wondering way was cheaper to run a gas boiler -

1 - keep it ticking over all day, constantly running at low temperature or

2 - turn it off for most of the day and just have it on for half an hour in the morning and half an hour at night - but having to heat up the boiler from cold each time.

If you could help that'd be great!!

We normally run our boiler from 0700 to 0830 and 1630 to 2130. When my wife was at home with our baby we let it run from 0700 to 2130. Over the winter this raised the heating bill by 20%. This was in a modern well insulated house. Hope this helps.

Hi UK plumber here, if you are talking about the boiler then option 2.
If its the water in the cylinder, and if its a modern well insulated cylinder the manuals say its about the same. But as stated earlier it is down to your boiler, where you live as outside temperature will make the feed colder, does it have a header tank, and is this insulated. As you can see to accurate a lot of other factors come into play.
Generally if you have a large cylinder well lagged its nominally cheaper to top up the heat as opposed to reheating the whole cylinder. Think of a large pan of water on your cooker once it starts to boil ( say 8 minutes ) you turn it right down and it takes almost no heat to keep it simmering, same principal on a greater scale.

letting it cool and heat up is gonna make it wear out faster.
