for part of my project i have to illustrate something they learned. (I.E. boil fish, make jerky, etc.)

For illustration, see if you can just do some pencil sketches, maybe mounted on posterboard instead of actually doing the physical project. You can always get a few bars of jerky and cut it up into little pieces to share.
