You'll need a program like PowerQuest PartitionMagic, you can then resize the C: drive freeing up space to be used by the new drive. Before creating the second drive, use Disk Manager (Control Panel > Admin Tools > Computer Mgmt >Disk Mgmt) to change the drive letter of your CD/DVD drive to E:. When you create your new partition it will then be assigned D:.
Keep in mind, alot of applications installed from the CD/DVD will have in the registry pointers back to the D: drive. You may in the future have to manually change those to E: if you add the drive.

The computer automatically assigns letters to each drive.
The hard drive is assigned the letter C.
The CD/DVD drive is assigned the letter D.
If you partition (Split) the hard drive the second partition will therefore be automatically and logically assigned the letter D and the CD drive (If you have one) will be assigned E.
So, to make a D drive, partition the C drive or add a CD Drive.

If there is only one drive letter on your PC, it means that you have only one physical hard disk attached.
To 'make' a D drive, you would either have to add another hard disk to your PC or format your existing hard disk and re-partition it to 2 or more partitions. Each partition will then show up as a different drive in your Operating System.

You really don't want to change the drive letters because it can confuse the computer. Assigning it a new drive letter can make the machine think a new drive has been attached, and it will stop recognising data already on the drive. There is no real reason to change drive letter that I have come across.

DVD Rom or r/w, cd or some such but you are not missing out just cos you ain't got a "D". Add 2 and you can have a"D" and an "E" add a flash card reader and you can have a "F" or a "J" just keep adding external drives and you can have a whole alphabet but you might lose track of stuff!

Although Alex was yelling at you for some strange reason, he was right. He just forgot about the other way you could end up with a D: drive: add a CD or DVD-ROM/RW drive.

You can make a partition in disk management, start, right click my computer, click manage, under storage in the left pane select disk management. Or add another hard disk to your pc, you can get an external one so you don't need to open up case, just plug it in and away you go.
