There are fresh water rays and salt water rays.

Saltwater Rays live in oceans and seas all over the world, and some even spend part of their life in estuaries. Rays live mostly on or near the sea bed. Different ray species are found in habitats ranging from close to shore to the extreme depths of the ocean (over 10,000 feet = 3,000 m deep).

Fresh water rays can be found in many rivers thru out the world St. Johns River in Florida is a good example.

I used to live in Panama (central America) and we used to snorkel a lot and they used to lay/lie on the bottom of the ocean in the more shallow areas, like 20 feet of water or less.
