Okay, here's my prob:
-I am a friendly person in my class, so if I like something, my classmates will like it for like a week. i.e: I loved Defying Gravity from wicked, and by the end of the week, everyone was "in love" with the play...
But, I have a problem with being upfront. I dont want to be mean, but I feel like I'm easily trampled by some people, or like I'm too submissive at times, afraid of annoying or making people uncomfortable. It's ironic cause I'm from the loudest city in the U.S. but I have a problem with being opinionated, and I go to high school next year, and I definetely want a strong character...any suggestions on not being afraid to speak my mind??
-no silly suggestions please-

You should realize that your opinions are just as important as anyone else's are--maybe more so. You should not go along with the popular opinion, if it is against what you believe in. There is nothing wrong with being quiet, but not to the point where people are led to believe that you agree with them--when you don't.

In high school, you should try to get into speech and debate activities--they could be helpful in getting you to speak your mind. In writing, you can also communicate your own opinions, so that other's will know what's on your mind.

I wish you a lot of luck. It was quite long ago when I was a high school student--and I still have a problem with speaking out against the majority. I wish a lot more for you.

Remember, your rights are as important as anybody elses. If you feel you are being walked over, use "I" statements, things like, "When you do that, I get p*i*s*s*e*d" etc. You are not attacking them, saying that their behaviour upsets you. When someone walks all over you, they are doing it because you allow it. It is not your responsibility to be their door mat. Anyone that rejects you for standing up for yourself is NOT your friend.

Just do it...be assertive, and don't let what others say or think get to you. The more you practice the easier it gets.
