...or extremely cheap? We're on college student budgets but would really like to make the trip to Arizona to see our favorite Major League teams during spring training. We considered sleeping in the car but were wondering if there were more convenient alternatives.

Have you considered youth hostels? If you were thinking about sleeping in a car, the hostel might be a reasonable alternative.

Here is a link to one, as a sample -- $17 a bed

Free is unlikely unless you want to pitch a tent at the park with all the vagrants. I believe there is a youth hostel in downtown Phoenix, know I've seen the buses and a sign but don't know the details. Maybe check on:

There are also loads of cheap motels like Motel 6 a little north of central phoenix that run $40-50 per night, split three ways that would be pretty cheap. You can check rates on their website as well.

The car will be fine. The weather is nice, or try the streets under a highway overpass. Perfect camping weather this time of year.

A youth hostel would be the way to go in this case. However, I don't have information on any.
