Turtles take more care than most people think- it is not uncommon to spend $150-200 to get things set up correctly.

A small turtle, such as a young Red-ear slider, needs:

- At least a 10 gallon tank, preferably a 20, partially filled, and it will outgrow that in about a year. You will need about a 50 gallon tank or tub by the 3rd or 4th year. Glass 20 gallon tank- $30. Plastic 20 gallon tub- $10

- Heating- a good in-tank heater to keep water at 75-80F

- Filtration- you will need a BIG filter to handle the wastes- aim for 3 times bigger than a fish tank needs. The good filters tend to be expensive, around $100.

- Basking log, ramp, or dock, or a pile of rocks.

- Basking lamp and holder, about $30

- UVB lighting and holder, about $40

- Good pelleted food, Mazuri is one of the best, about $3/week.

- Other stuff- thermometers, tank decor, etc.

First thing you need to know is that you can not keep a turtle in a bowl. Turtles get big they don't stay small you will evenually need a tank the size of a kiddie swimming pool, plus you need a UVB light they are very important in keeping the turtle healthy. You will also need a basking light and a spot for the turtle to get out of the water and bask. Turtles are not cheap or easy to care for and they live a very long time so plan on keeping it for 20 some years. What happens to the turtle when she goes to college? Iwould think about getting an easier pet.

I saw a bunch of little turtles in a pet store and fell in LOVE! They were so cute, but if I had bought the little turtles they had there, I wouldn't have been able to give them the space they needed as adults.

Turtles, Tortoises, and Terrapins are reptiles of the order Testudines (all living turtles belong to the crown group Chelonia), most of whose body is shielded by a special bony or cartilagenous shell developed from their ribs. The Order Testudines includes both extant (living) and extinct species, the earliest turtles being known from around 200+ million years ago, making turtles one of the oldest reptile groups, and a much more ancient group than the lizards and snakes. About 300 species are alive today. Some are highly endangered. Turtles are ectothermic or cold-blooded, which means that their body temperature changes with their surroundings.

Turtles take alot of time and care choose wisly before you buy. Be sure you want to invest the time in a turtle. Its not a dog or a cat, you need to be active in its care daily. They need lots of love and attention. You must be patient because it take time for them to get used to you. Be planning to take care of them your whole life cause they can live for soem 30 to 40 years some breeds longer. They are a lifetime investment.

First of all, even box turtles are illegal to own as pets, unless they're being used for educational purposes (IE; in a classroom)

We had a turtle, but he was being used in a preschool classroom at times. My brother poured too much water in his tank for him to swin in one day, though, and he died. We never got another one.

If you want a reptile, get an iguana.
