I'm going into photography, and I need a good photo editing program for my computer. I'm not looking for anything too expensive. From the range of $20-$200.

GIMP is a free, open-source alternative to Photoshop.

Photoshop Elements (http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-29230477-Photoshop-Elements-5-0/dp/B000HLV59W/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/105-0984288-7766013?ie=UTF8&s=software&qid=1173328095&sr=1-1 ) is a great lightweight version of the real thing - it does all the basic photo manipulation things most people starting out will need, without the more involved graphic design functionality. It retails for $80.

You might look at getting either Photoshop Elements ($79-99) (basically a less versatile version of Photoshop), or Paint Shop Pro X ($99). Both are good programs from what I've seen.

For a Photoshop-like option, use either The GNU Graphics Manipulation Program (aka GIMP) or Paint.NET

For a vector-based drawing program, try Inkscape or Sodipodi.

Inkscape and Gimp are free, open source. I use them both exclusively. I think Gimp also has a version for photoshop users.
