I have the same problem, what I've herd is lack of calcium, Because calcium helps harden your nails and make them stronger. If you dont like milk or dairy products, then you can simply just go to the store and buy calcium pills.

I'm probably not much help since my nails like to flake and split and I've not had a lot of luck stopping them until recently. And right now it may be too recent to be certain. Personally I don't like the artificial nails because I work in a metal shop and it's pretty tough on them and at times the only thing to cleanup sufficently with is acetone which pretty much does them in. Nail hardener has always made my nails more brittle and flaky. Perhaps it's only hardening the outer layer and that's flaking off (with a layer of the nail attatched)- I'm not sure. Recently I've been using polishes and treatments that say "moisturizing" and this has helped a lot. For Christmas I was given a bottle of Nail-Tek brand polish foundation. I don't know where to get more or what it cost but it's the best I've ever used. My nails chip still (working with the metal and all) but not as often. It also tends to smooth out the nail surface. I'm supposed to put on one layer each day for 5 days. It's clear, so if I have to use acetone to clean up it's no big deal. Besides, it's tough and a quick swipe of acetone doesn't remove all the polish, yet it stills removes more easily than artificial nails. I don't know if all moisturizing polish would work about as well if I did the 5 day thing with it, but I will likely be finding out when this bottle is empty. Good luck.

I think you answered your own question on the problem...water and working with your hands aren't good for nails.

If you can wear rubber gloves that will save your nails a lot. If your work with your fingers rather than your nails that would be good also. Other than that, the culprit of your problem is what your nails soak in.

What I'd recommend, if you have the time, is to wear nail polish over a base coat ( a good base coat) and top coat (Seche Vie). If you then re-apply the top coat every night or every other night it will help to protect your nails more than you do now.

As a former nail biter your nails should be really strong but the water is just tearing them up.

The style these days is natural nails and a shorter length so if you decide to go o'natural they would look very nice.

I read the response about the nail buffer and while that is a great tool for nails, it takes part of the nail off to make it smooth so this would only help to thin your nails and I doubt that's what you want. Sorry.

First thing you need to do is purchase a good pair of rubber gloves. Water makes nail not only thin but can lead to splitting of the nail themselves. So everytime your nails are in water be sure to protect them. After a shower of bath or swimming for that matter the first thing you need to do is to dry your nail off before anything else.

You said that you've tried a lot of products and the only thing I can add to that is to be sure your nails have polish on them at all times. I mostly use clear. Hope this helps.

Try that nail buffer they sale in stands at the mall. It's about 20.00, but it works. I use the fur sides maybe once a month, and only the buffer a few times a week. the buffer makes the lines and cracks stay away from your nails, and it also makes them stronger, not to mention shiny. Good luck.

I know 20.00 sounds like a lot, but mine lasted for about 6 to 9 months, so I think it was worth it.

there is a product called " witchcraft" .you will find it in the nail polish section . paint it on just like any nail polish.use it regularly. i agree you should get a professional manicure done, just so you can watch the things they do. then file your nails to shape them every other day.. :)
