You first have to get a common denominator:
3/5 - 1/3 [Original Problem]

Multiples of 5: 5, 10, (15), 20
Multiples of 3: 3, 6, 9, 12, (15)

The common denominator is 15

1st Fraction:
What did you multiply 5 [Denominator] with to get 15?
5 x [3] = 15

Multiply the numberator [top number] and the denominator [bottom numer] by [3]:

3 [Numerator] x 3 = 9
5 [Denominator] x 3 = 15
9/15

For the 2nd fraction:

What did you multiply the 3 [Denominator] to get 15?
3 x [5] = 15

Multiply the numerator [top number] and denominator [bottom numer] by [5]:

1 [Numerator] x 5 = 5
3 [Denominator] x 5 = 15
5/15

Now, subtract the numerators and leave the denominator ALONE!!!

9/15 - 5/15 = 4/15

You have to give them the same denominator (bottom number). Change both fraction to fifteenths. You have to multiply the numerator (top number) by the same thing though. 3/5 would be 9/15. So now multiply both numbers in the second fraction by the same number so that the bottom number equals 15 then you can subtract it. I'm sure someone has just given you the answer by now but it is important that you understand this because it will be on the test.

you have to have a common denominator
so lets go with 15 bc 3 and five go into 15
ok
3/5 = 9/15
1/3= 5/15
now you subtract 9/15 and 5/15=4/15 and simplify if you can

if your question is 3/5 - 1/3 then you make sure they have the same denominator (which is 15)

make sure it has the least common denominator then solve so it wuld become 9/16-5/15 which wuld equal 4/15

2/5 is the answer. You have 3 fifths and if you take away one third of that you are left with 2 fifths.
