No one really knows the answer to this question, but I've heard the general estimate to be around 10,000. The reason we don't know is because killer whales are very hard to study in some parts of the world (like Anarctica for example) while in other places we know exactly how many there are. I am a killer whale researcher in the Puget Sound area (near Seattle) and we focus on a group called the Southern Residents (these whales were placed on the Endagered Species List in November 2004). There are three pods that frequent that area and are the most studied killer whales in the world. Right now, their current population is 85 individuals. A lot more work will have to be done to gain a world-wide population estimate and it will have to start with dedicated photo-ID work (which is already in progress). We can look at how many times we sight certain individual whales by using photographs and from this information we can statistically come up with a population estimate. However it takes a lot of time, money, cooperation, and dedication to collect data in the field. I hope this helps.

I can't even leash train my damn dog. He pees all over himself and nearly hog-ties me with the leash every time I try. At least I wouldn't know when the whale peed on me. Or is that what it was doing when it crushed the last guy? Snuggling up nice and close in order to better foul the trainer? Whatever. I'd better just feed the damn dog and the damn whale and stay out of their damn way.

Nobody knows, er, knowbody nos. There is no way to get an accurate count or even close estimate of any sea life. Man has never seen the biggest or mostest and probably never will. They live, grow, and die without ever being seen or counted. "How big" relates only to what has been seen, not what is possible.
