They are trying to get the Taliban and their supporters to surrender and establish a democratic government, in addition to re-building infrastructure that has been destroyed over the last 30 years by various invaders...
the Taliban is an extremely fundamentalist branch of Islam, and they do not believe in democracy...they have lived the same way for hundreds of years, and are offended by Western values...girls may not go to school, and women can be treated poorly compared to the West...they receive a great amount of their money from opium (poppies they grow)
Afghanistan is one of the world's most landmined countries, and has been fought over by various tribal groups, the British, the Indians, the Soviets, and now the United States and their allies...Osama bin Laden was trained by the CIA to be an operative against the Soviets in the 1980's

Canada is a member of NATO, a treaty that states if a member of NATO is attacked, all the member nations will come to the aid of the attacked member. They are supporting Canada by going to Afghanistan. America does't need anyone's support, haven't you noticed.
