We do not like to feel the uncomfortable emotions and so tend to repress them or avoid that which evokes them (defense mechanisms). To admit a wrong is to feel the sense of shame or recrimination, so we deny our faults in order to avoid the painful affect. Some people might not feel uncomfortable admitting mistakes, perhaps because of a nurturing childhood. As well, consider Who is the one being admitted to. Unconditional positive regard would allow the wrongdoer to admit wrongs comfortably. Finger-pointing judgmentalism would cause people to deny wrongdoing. Personally, I would not want to admit my mistakes to the world at large, as not all people are forgiving.
