I'm planning to get a Lenovo Thinkpad R60 - 512MB Ram.

My question's whether Shared Memory is specific to a computer's build or is it a 'process' which can be enabled on any computer?

And does Shared Memory mean sharing the RAM between apps and gfx/video cards?

Shared memory is used when the computer has an onboard video card. You can adjust the amount of memory shared for the video card in the bios.

There are other times when shared memory comes into effect, such as if you buy a Geforce Turbocache card that uses some of the system memory for video memory.

Shared memory is often use by the graphic accelerator of our notebook or pc (system). the more memory we shared (RAM), the higher and faster our graphic acceleration.

But beware, make sure you have a SAFE amount of available physical memory (RAM).

Yes, shared memory mean sharing RAM between apps (system) and graphic accelerator (GFX/video card)

My recommendation is, make sure your available RAM is more than 256 MB for windows XP, and if possible, upgrade your lenovo to 1 GB, u will find it much fuster and smooth.
