I can see your question both ways, asker. There are some parents who care about their kids and education. They go to parent-teacher conferences, help kids with homework, enforce values, and support their kids. With all this positivity, children tend to be more successful and healthier. As long as love is in the household, kids will prosper.

On the other hand, some kids have to raise themselves at an early age because of single parent homes (not true all of the time--a lot of people have become great productive citizens regardless of 1 parent), absence of parents, and parental behavior. Negativity as such results in immoral behavior (getting on drugs), skipping school, dropping out of school, bad grades, suspensions/expulsions, and prison time.

I can't speak for college students - the fact that they made it that far says they care something about education.

Understand that I'm not stereotyping; I've seen all of these experiences as a high school teacher and have done research studies pertaining to this subject. Hope this has shed some light on this situation.

I do not agree that "nobody" cares about school "no more". There are many students such as myself who care very much, because they seek to better themselves through learning.

The students who do not care are the same ones who do not understand the true importance of learning. They may see school as a competition for class rank, as a place for rewarding the "smart kids"...others are too preoccupied with sports - to the point when practice is their only motivation for attending school. These views should be changed, and the importance of knowledge emphasized.

I would agree that many students should try harder to take advantage of the opportunities that schools provide. However, it is unfair to make the generalization that "nobody" cares about school.

That's because the school systems took all the fun out of school. There are so many tests, and grades and things you HAVE to study that most kids don't even want to have anything to do with that it ticks them off and they give up.

I'm an artist...a graphic designer...I don't really need to know algebra to make my work...I just need to know english and some art classes, history, and computer classes. I'm never going to USE any of this other junk so WHY are you making me take biology and math courses...and music?

We don't see the point...they're wasting our time...and this day an age is all about moving fast and forward and getting to the point. Teaching us stuff we really don't need isn't at all to the point.

I thinks it's the technology today that makes us lazy. We sometimes abuse privaleges like tv's, i-pods, and computers. Nobody bothers to be informed anymore and they just don't want to learn. They are too distracted with outside happenings and new material items. Ya, I've noticed it. I guess, they're just not as motivated. Go figure. What did happen to those days that were just...simple.

I think it is because kids are not being taught the reason they need to get an education anymore. It is all about scores, who is at the top of the class, are you good enough to please your parents and if you are not the best in all those you don't feel you belong in school. All of the grades, class rank and the rest of it needs to be thrown out and let kids get back to learning.

Children will only care, if the parents teach them the importance of a good education. Too many parents today are too young and uneducated themselves and settle for struggling instead of working toward their goals. It starts at home.

Apathy is roaming across America's youth like a tidal wave. But, whatever, I don't really care.
