I use AdAware and SpyBot Search and Destroy and have had no problems with them. Avast anti-virus is good, as is AVG free. I work with a non-profit, and our whole office is protected by this wonderful free software.

If you go for SpyBot, be sure you get the right one. SpyBot Search and Destroy is the right one. There's another one with a highly similar name that will run a free scan and then charge you to remove things. The real SpyBot Search and Destroy is totally free, for both scanning and removal. Don't get tricked by an impostor! Follow the instructions carefully.

I can also endorse Firefox. We use that, too.

It's been said a lot in the other responses:

Spybot Search and Destroy
Ad-aware from Lavasoft

But one that wasn't mentioned, and I am surprised, is Spyware Blaster. It protects you from Active X based spyware, hijackers. and many other malware files that your computer can be exposed to. It is easy to use and it is free.

I saw it mentioned previously, but your choice of browsers is real important. The most secure browser is Opera, but the interface is a little different than most. I does offer a lot of cool different skins though. I use it sometimes.

The one that I recommend though is Firefox from Mozilla, it is faster than Internet Explorer and is much more secure. The interface is easy to use and understand.

But, if you are an IE "die hard" then, by all means, upgrade to IE 7.0. It is much more secure although I think they made it more difficult to use. I think it is a matter of "just getting used to it". The one user friendly option that it does provide, is, Multi-Tabbed browsing (which Firefox and Opera has had for years), but it is a big improvement over 6.0.

Good Luck!!!!!!
