Full disclosure I've owned my Jeep TJ for 9+ years. I've spent way too much money modifying it, but I love it so much I've dedicated a web site to it.

Is a Wranger good at speed?
Answer No. They have the aerodynamics of a poorly formed brick. The wind noise on the freeway is deafening with a hard top and completely unreasonable with the top off. Gas mileage is 15mpg on a good day, down hill, with a tail wind.

Price?
New, well compare the jeep to any other car and they are very expensive for what you get. The interiors are sparse and plasticity. The ride is rough, handling marginal, and I've already talked about the wind noise.

Used there are some killer deals out there. Jeeps don't hold their value which means you can get a pretty good deal on a good used jeep that's never been used for anything other than running to the mall.

Long lasting?
I've heard many stories of the old straight 6 jeep engines going well over 200K miles with proper maintenance. Who knows how long the new v6 engines will last.

Why don't they hold their value?
Hard to say, they are expensive for what you get. They have a reputation for being problematic. And a lot of people buy them because they look cool, but after a while tire of the rough, noisy ride and poor gas mileage.

So why do I love my jeep so much, because it is bar none the best off-road vehicle I've ever owned. Take the top and doors off and cruise around town on a nice day, it doesn't get any better than that.

The older Jeep Wrangler was built for mainly one reason: Off road use. They weren't really designed for use as a commuter vehicle. Many people didn't realize that and bought a Jeep because it looked cool, only to sell it for much less later because it got bad mileage and was a rough ride. My Rubicon gets about 30 mpg when used off road (where it was made to be used). On road about 7. I'm not complaining, because I bought it for off road use, not to look cool driving to the mall. Try to take a Toyota or a Honda some of the places us Jeepers have been and you'll see that they WERE made for the mall trips.

I have a wrangler - the speed is half-aased - takes five minutes to get up to 70 - price was over 30K (high) and it does seem to be long lasting. No trouble with it. Dont' know why the resale value is low.

Jeeps are Jeeps pure and simple.

30k for a Jeep, someone robbed that guy. The best Jeeps can be bought for 15K

Never buy a 4 cylinder Jeep. (I do not even know why they make them)

Love em or hate em. Buy cheap and have fun.
