It is for a college paper. I can not use history. I can not research a country. Some students are doing violence in television, the war in Iraq, and abortion. So I can not repeat their topics.

Well, how about looking in the Sunday paper for headlines?? The hot subjects will be there, and the articles could be part of the research.

Some ideas that come to mind immediately:

Teen pregnancy/abortion/use of the drug that is supposed to decrease the chance of cancer in girls

the coming presidential race

Medicare and the re-definition of aging

Effects of ADHD medications on teens (diabetes increase, etc.)

Pick any serious medical condition and discuss causes and new treatments/cures

Muslim theology as opposed to the Judeo-Christian outlook

The Rain Forest--Is it Still There???

Save the ... whales... dolphins.... etc.

How to save money. Discuss compound interest, Roth and Traditional IRAs and budgeting, the use of credit cards and a better way to establish credit without paying such a high interest rate. Couple with the idea of how to get out and stay out of debt.

Child rearing in the US -- Who is raising the kids, parents or schools?

That ought to get you started on something. Hope it goes well.

The key to an outstanding research paper, and equally enjoyable researching experience, is to get into the field you enjoy.
Do you like makeup and fashion? Research something of interest from there. Or music? What areas do you find enjoyable? Animals? Traveling? After you decide that, think about what you'd like to know, or like others to know, about that subject.
Then have a good time. The research gives you opportunity to write about something you're interested in, which will come through in your writing.
Good luck, and have a star.

I did a pretty good paper last semester on how feminism has made Fathers obsolete. I have been a single mom for a long time and finally have a good man in my life who is a great Father. There is a lot of info and I made a good grade. Good Luck!

How about Real vs. Reel in movies? Basically you read a book like Pride and Prejudice and watch the movie and compare and contrast the differences and how Hollywood over dramatized concept...or it could be about a real story...
