If a country has many states in it, such as the United States, then the state is smaller than the country in which it lies. But there are many small countries such as Ecuador or Switzerland or Gambia which are much smaller than some of our large states such as Alaska and Texas.

A Country of course. states are IN a country. a country is just a big land full of us people in different states.

there's a difference between a state and a State (capitalized). a State is a part of a country, such as the 50 states of america.
pretty much all states are countries. neither is defined by the amount of land, though.

It depends on the size of the country and state. For instance, California is larger than the country Lichtenstein. Siberia in Russia is larger than Hawaii. You can't make a general statement of this subject.

in most cases a country...but it varies,texas is a lot bigger than some countries and i have heard we are the only one with actual states
