This was the revolt against Mexican rule in the 1830s, on the part of the settlers (mainly from the U.S., but also including a few British immigrants) that led to creation of the Texas Republic. The main impact followed when the independent repubolic of Texas bargained to enter the United States (gaining a commitment, which I believe still exists, that Texas has the right to divide into four units each of which will become a state of the United State, if it so chooses). The incorporation of Texas into the U.S. in the 1840s led to war with Mexico, which the U.S. won, and in consequence there was an extension of American borders to include the southwest and parts of the next tier of what became states, and California (beyond that, the U.S. was a Pacific Coast country leading to further expansion and to involvement in the affairs of the Pacific and Far East area). The addition of Texas also played a role in exacerbating the conflict that was building up between slave states (Texas was a new, vigorous, slave state) and non-slave states, leading a decade after the Mexican War ended to the last steps of the shifts that culminated in the American Civil War.

Texas War For Independence Summary

Gee, I think it was when Texas fought against Spanish/Mexican rule and became an independent for a short time. I believe that fight might have been, in part, because many who just couldn't handle being part of "the system" and needed more open spaces and more freedom went to Texas. Renegades as well as fugitives, including slaves. They had established an independence long before they actually had to fight for it since it was so far away from the Mexican capital. The fight for true independence began when Mexico tried to pull in the reigns and remind Texans that they were not really independent.

I would imagine that the United States government had to "court" Texas to convince them to become part of the United States rather than remain independent. I think that a bit of autonomy or "hands off" had to be promised to Texas to convince them to join the union. I think even today Texans are a lot like that; very independent and strong-willed individuals.

Texas was like a role model for the United States in future military actions. It brought Mexico's military's might out in the open for the United States government to see. A lot of heroes in Texas.
