i cannot access it at all. it is beyond self repair because i cannot reach any screen beyond command prompt and every command i try does not work.

if there is nothing i can do myself what other actions are possible? i do not want to throw away an almost new 160 gb hd?

This sounds like the sasser virus. Follow the directions on this link to disinfect

That would be truly strange.
Local Security Authority Service - is a windows exe file that is part of the user authentication system. I dont see how that would "eat" a hard drive.

If you can get to a command prompt the drive is still actually working but cant log you on because of the user system is probably missing.

Boot the machine with the operating system CD and attempt to do a repair installation. If that fails just reformat the drive and start over. The drive is fine its your OS that is gone.
