The speedometer can say 180MPH, and it doesn't mean that it'll reach 180MPH, all depends upon the governor that the manufacturer has installed in it. For the Mazda6 4 Cylinder, I believe the governor is set at 115-120MPH. And maybe, it's the limitation on the tires. If it were higher rated tires, it could go a bit faster, then again...maybe revving at the redline.
As for the Jeep, the governor on SUV's, trucks are usually set at 95-98 or even 105MPH. Again, because of tires, and other safety related concerns.
I find it amusing how many speedo's in new cars have these 180-200MPH limits, when in reality, they can hardly do half of that...in other words, half the speedo will never be used. It just gives some people the perceived notion their Scion can go that quick.

This a "that depends..." question. The previous poster was partially correct - most new cars have a built in speed limiter - in the engine calibrations which limits the top speed by various methods - cutting the fuel supply and/or altering shift scehdules (AUTO). the exception is usually sports cars - they are usually limited aerodynamicaly as well although they may also have a top speed limiter due based on the speed rating of the tires. In the case where the car is limited only by aerodynamics - more horsepower = more top speed.
Weight doesn't have much to do with top speed - it only increases the rolling resistance a small amount. A ton of weight will have an impact - but small amounts less so.
Weight and horspower do have a direct effect on the acceleration of the vehicle - higher power and lower weight = faster acceleration - or the ability to get to a given speed sooner from a dead stop pr slower speed.
PS I'd bet on the Mazda - the jeep is geared lower limiting top speed and is less aerodynamic.

You have to compare with everthing being the same or simular there are a lot of variables like
Transmission ratios,
how many gears does each have?
what is the final driveaxle ratio for each...
tire diameters... and wheel sizes
speedo are no indication of will a vehicle reach the maximum MPH on it or not...
often a majority can break a speedo by exceeding its limitation
horsepower has a dramatic effect on the topend of MPH because not only is the original vehicle weight a factor but over body wind drag and underbody Chassis wind drag affect every
lets see mazada low to the ground vs jeep higher off ground
many of the newer vehicles do have rev limiters...
a a friend experienced this first hand in a 86 Toyota MR2 manual 5 spd on the Black Canyon Freeway in Phoenix...
3rd gear 115 MPH @8200 RPMs yes thats correct 8200 RPMs the computer shut off the igntion and fuel injection until it came back down to 6200 RPM ... poor Sam thought he had bought a motor for a new MR2...
with more info I could be a better help... but you can always do the Owl/toosie pop test, a live trial... dragstrip or air strip

i own a shop and yes it makes a difference in it ,but one thing that plays a big role in it that most people leave out is the gear ratio it is running, and a good gear can increase or decrease the speed of it,this all depends on what its running on,and the distance it is running in also,i have seen some good running 4 cylinders run off from a light and leave a lot of v-6 and v-8 engines, all because of the gear,in this case Mazda would be a lot faster than the jeep would, because a jeep is only geared to take so much, but the Mazda would be the dominant one in this case, good luck,i hope this helps.

Where R U ?BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS ? There is more to sreed than hp.Are You talking Brake hp or what the dynamometer tells 'em with no power grubbin" attachments,Take into consideration the rear end gears, auto or stick,EFI as opposed to a carb(s) There are too many factors to even begin to try to explain .Do some serious reading on Nascar etc. Not to hurt your feelins' but it sounds like you are about to bite off moren' ya can chew. Bestof Luck.MY choice would be the MAZDA, They make a Beaut of a killer machine.PS do you know what a rev limiter is ??NO ? BEST check into that gem !!

Top speed is designed at the factory. More hp will allow you to go fast, faster.
