I want to be able to draw comics, characters, etc. But how? Newspaper comics now-a-days seem like they would be extremely simple to draw, but then when i attempt to draw any of them, they always turn out horrible. MIKEY also asked this question, but a little different. I'm asking again because he also didn't get very many responses, and i was hoping maybe more people would read this one.
I'm looking for something easy to draw, but it looks good. It's not for buisness or anything, i just want to be able to draw for fun. Thanx

What I recommend to most beginner artists with drawing is this:

When you're trying to draw something, break it down into shapes just for the placement; an "underdrawing", if you will. Very lightly sketch the shape of the head. Then two circles where the eyes will be. Then a rough shape where the nose will be. Then a giant oval for the body. What you'll end up with is a "sophisticated" stick-figure that should roughly match the proportions of the person/thing you're trying to draw. If your head is too big or body is too small or eyes are too close together, etc., you should notice it and fix it in this stage. THEN draw the details OVER the underdrawing. detail the eyes where the circles are. and so on. Then ink the final drawing, and erase all the pencil marks.

I'm guessing that currently you probably start with one eye and draw all the detail of that eye, then move on to the next eye and then the nose, etc. This will mess up your placement on the page. You need to get an overall feeling of the placement on the figure. That's what the Underdrawing is for.

Comic strip (newspaper) characters are no simpler to draw than comic book characters. Just because they look more cartoonish, it still requires proper placement of the features to match the original, just like a comic book character.

When you see on TV a professional animator or comic book artist drawing a flawless cartoon character with a few strokes of his pen, it's because he's drawn it a thousand times and could do it with his eyes closed. But if you put a drawing in front of him that he's never seen before and ask him to match it, he will lightly sketch an Underdrawing first, otherwise known as "guidelines". See if that helps you.

Before you start drawing comic ,for a newspaper or other publication . You must get a theme for your drawing for example. Playboy magazine their comic theme is mostly sex or sexual situations. or Field and Stream their theme is. Hunting and wildlife every magazine or publication is different and some are more difficult than others. Now the hard part is to figure out your theme. It could be politics, family, the work environment , or the different people you meet or see.

Now you got your theme figured out. whats your strength in drawing . is it animals, people, or try something different like a plant. that will be your main characters.

I hope this makes sense to you and a help to your problem .
good luck and no worries

What has helped me is to look at something that is 3 dimension and picture it in my mind as 2 dimension. another thing that might help is when you try to draw from another drawing, start out by using graft paper that way it breaks down on some of the confusion and you can concentrate on only part of the drawing at a time.

i like to draw myself and the one way that i started was by drawing disney cartoons and then moved into the japanimation which i think is a bit more easier depending on the characters you draw though. But i would say start with basic characters then move your way up to the comic characters since they would have more detail and shadow to bring them to life.

well... wat i would say is , if u learn te basics properly i.e; human anatomy , it would be easy for u to draw cartoons . If u know the structure of the human body , u can distort it anytime to get a cartoon . Or else u could opt for a cartoon course where they teach u diff faces, poses and figures for cartoons which dont help u to learn the actual human anatomy .

After u get comfy wit the cartoons u can possibly learn to draw them using brush and indian ink.

Well, just be creative. When I was a kid, I drew some characters with big noses, just make characters that have some feature that makes them different from all the present cartoons. Also, half the cartoon is how funny it is, you need a good since of humor. You can try sending them into a magazine.

Try getting "Drawing on the funny side of the brain," by Chris Hart. He is pretty good. You could also try anything by Blitz.
