Some friends and I want to make some face molds, and we're looking for a place to buy alginate for cheap. Anyone have any ideas?

I tried not to long ago to find cheap alginate on the internet, but failed, because any place with cheap alginate ($5/lb) had shipping charges which offset any potential savings by far as I didn't need much. So I ended up phoning local dental supply companies out of the yellow pages, comparing their prices, and picking it up myself which came to $10/lb.
by the way, the mixing instruction on the dental alginate gave a very fast set very firm alginate. It turned out better to use twice the water recommended, it gave more work/mixing time and more volume. Maybe even more water is OK. So try that out before you get started for real.
I think some art supply places carry it as well.

Look up all the dental companies in your area and talk to them. If your lucky one might be willing to sell you alginate by the case. Also try talking to a dentist and ask if they would let you pay them to order you some. Remember to look for plain alginate when looking online or in catalogs. Dental alginate works great. Specialty alginates that are stronger or set quicker are only needed if your doing this all the time or for a very special project. Also look into reusable alginate sold through art supply stores like **** blick.

I'd use fast set alginate, don't think brand matters. If you buy dental alginate, then test with small amount how much water to use. The instructions for dental use will use less water (like 1:1) which makes less material and very fast setting times. You can use 2:1 or even 3:1 water: alginate. As shipping costs offset savings via internet I bought some from a local dental supply company. Went through the yellow pages for dental supply and phoned around until I found one which had it and sold it to me. check that out as well. Some art supply stores carry it as well. My rough guess is that a pound would work good for a face. If you do face and shoulders maybe 2 and you will need a mothermold. Though I don't have much alginate experience and only used it 2 or 3 times. Also you need to cast into alginate soon, it shrivels when it dries. You also will get only one really good cast per mold.
