The babies genetalia is developed by week 12. After that they are able to determine the sex of the baby. But will most likely not attempt it at that early stage.
I found out that I was having a boy at 13 weeks and 5 days. There was an obvious penis
The most accurate time is indeed around 20 weeks, BUT that is not the soonest they can tell

they normally can't tell the sex until you are 18 weeks or more because the baby is still very Small so they normally wait til the 18 week scan to tell you as they don't want to get peoples hopes up. Some times even at 18 weeks they can be wrong. I had a friend that was told she was having a boy and it came out a girl.

In some cases they can. However, ultrasounds are expensive, so most insurance companies insist that you wait unti 18 or 20 weeks so they can be sure you'll be able to tell.
Good luck and congrats!

well i am 18 weeks pregnant and had my first ultrasound yesterday and they determined it was a girl. 14 weeks might be too young. it also depends on the skill of the ultrasound tech and if the b aby turns the right way for them to tell.

the fast answer is that the gender of a toddler is determined by technique of the male. The chromosomes that make certain gender are the "x" and "y" chromosome. a woman has 2 "x" chromosomes and a male has an "x" and a "y" chromosome. All egg cells carry the "x" chromosome, yet sperm cells can carry both "x" or "y." If the egg if fertilized by technique of a sperm cellular carrying the "x" chromosome, the toddler will be a woman. If the sperm is carrying the "y" chromosome, the toddler will be a boy.
