I think it should be mandatory when in some schools where safety is an issue. For example, some in some areas of Los Angeles, you can get shot by a gang member for wearing the color red. They could assume you are a member of a rival gang because of the color of clothing you wear.
Uniforms at schools in gang areas make it safer for students to get to and from school and creates more harmony between students in school.

I think it's a good idea, as it eliminates competition based on the superficial rather than the substantial, such as academics. It also breaks down the class system giving everyone a fair shot at achievement, grade based achievement. We'll be turning out better educated more open-minded students in the long run, and I am all for that. Rights and freedoms can be given priority once these students have been given the best education society has to offer as a stepping stone to greatness, to a chemistry lab, or political office, even the White House. The best preparation will ensure the best succeeds.

True, people may think it is a sign of no democracy, but then, the school would not have to worry about dress code. I personally think uniforms are better. I've never bumped into a public school with uniforms, though. I'm only in 7th grade myself. But uniforms will probably make you less concentrated on how you look. Maybe even enhance your concentration on schoolwork.

School never claimed to be a democracy, except when you elect class officers, and even the student government is fettered in what they may do by the administration. I think uniforms would be a good idea, because then students wouldn't shoot each other over "colors", or try to steal each other's clothes, because they'd all wear the same thing.

As a mother, I think uniforms in public school are an answer to every mother's prayer, "Lord, I pray that I will not be asked to wash one pair of jeans today/tonight just so my child will have something to wear to school tomorrow."

As a teacher, I applaud the public education systems who have initiated uniforms; but, at the same time, abhor the administration for their failure to stand behind the initiative. Teachers are spending more and more time enforcing dress codes than they are teaching! Tuck in your shirt, remove that sweater, it's not standard uniform issue! You're wearing white socks, and the uniform code clearly states black socks!

Teachers cannot focus on teaching because the administration is not enforcing the dress codes they, themselves, have recommended. "Stand up" for your conviction, or "stand down". When the child arrives at school, not attired in the appropriate uniform, send he/she home; call his/her parent at home, work, the bar, wherever, and let them know their child will not be admitted into the building or into a classroom until the proscribed dress is observed.

Will administrators carry through? No. Why? Because average daily attendance with be affected, and Federal and state funds may be in jeopardy!

Nothing in the Constitution of the United States or the Amendment to the Constituion addresses a student's rights to wear anything they want to school; neither does it address the "right to wear" anything you want to work.

Accepted wearing apparel at work and/or school is at the discretion of the person/persons operating that entity.

As a parent I feel that uniforms in public school is a genius idea. Sure, it doesn't leave any room for self expression as far as how you dress, but it eliminates many "Popularity Contests." Alot of kids are made fun of by the way that they dress...whether it be just their style or just the fact that they can't afford all the name brand threads. Anywho...if and when I was younger I wouldn't have liked it either. You just have to suck it up...there is really not much you can do about it.

I believe that uniforms are not necessary in public schools, because it limits the students' already very limited freedom, and students usually hate it and try to get around the uniforms anyways in their own creative way. Therefore the uniforms are actually useless in a way.

I think the uniforms are a good idea. You don't have to worry about looking fashionable, or people making fun of you by your clothes. Freedom has nothing to do with it.

Some people have valid reason for disliking uniforms. One of them is Prosopagnosia. I dislike any environment where anyone looks/wears clothing alike. Experts believe there are at least 5 to 10 % of people like me who have some form of this problem.
