Being lost can be scary. Keep a cool head. Use available information. Back track if possible. If you lack information, then set camp and stay put. Try to stay dry and warm or out of the elements. Element exposure is very dangerous followed by dehydration and hunger.
Why is this in movies?

Scary at times, plerplexing at others, and sometimes just all-around fabulous. If you haven't watched, it well-written, not always well-acted, but it feels like someone put effort into it at the very least.

Not by today's standards of scary. It is suspenseful and mysterious, so if the unknown frightens you, then I guess you could call it scary.
