Well, first of all consider your situation. How old are you? if you are in your teens then you should look at getting a hamster/gerbil/mouse. these are low maintenence, and do not live very long, so when you go to college getting rid of them will not be an issue. If you are older than that, or much younger, but still want a 'low maintenence' pet then you could look at getting a cat, but remember they can live up to 20 years-that is a lot of commitment, plus they are quite expensive to keep.
Rats are relatively cheap to keep, but require quite a bit of work.
Rabbits and guinea pigs live up to 9 years, and are cheaper to keep (especially rabbits as they have less specific diets), but are more work, as they will need exercise everyday, and handling and their cage cleaning out twice a week (or once if they are litter trained, but the litter box should then be cleaned out every day) Guinea pigs also need vitamin C every day, so will need a good supply of fresh vegetables, which is another cost to consider.
A dog is the most work. Also the most expensive. Even the smaller breeds need walking at least once a day, and they should not be left for long periods of time, and hence are a good family pet, for when there is always someone at home.
other options are reptiles, birds and fish.
reptiles are low-ish maintenence, but can be quite expensive to keep.
birds are expensive and can require quite a bit of work too, as they like company. if you want to teach you bird to talk that is again more time.
Fish can be expensive if you want tropical ones, these will then need specialist care, and so can be quite a bit of work. If you want coldwater fish then they tend to require less specialist care, and so can be easy to keep, however they are not particularly interactive pets.

What I would suggest is for you to go to a shelter (the rspca or aspca in america(?) ) and explain your situation. they will then tell you what kind of animal will best fit your lifestyle, and can help you to choose one you like. this is how I got my first two pets.

there are SO many questions to ask before anyone can suggest a good pet for you.

Why do you want a pet (added responsibility, something fun to do, a loving companian etc,)?

What type of place do you live in(house, apt, etc)?

Does anyone else live with you that may have allergies?

Are there small children around your home?

How much responsibility are you looking for?

What does your work schedule look like?

My personal opinions....

I've only ever had one good cat in my life, I loved her dearly, but every other cat i've had or lived with has eventually started messing around the house no matter how often I changed the litter box.....which is an annoying responsibility in and of itself....

I eventually want a dog....but they require a lot of attention, and a good trainer....neither of which i have at the moment....

I love my fish....i feed them every day, and change the water every couple weeks....so they are low maintnance and fun to watch....but not much of a companion pet....

I find birds highly annoying....they are loud and most of them are extrememly messy, as well as being extrememly needy....

I don't have much use for rodents, but they are relatively simple from what i understand, and can be a fuzzy companion to a point.....all and all i'd rather have a dog to play with

snakes and lizards are fun, just b/c they are....and while i love playing with the ones my friends have....i think i would tire of them if they were my own....

hope that helps......and please for the sake of yourself (as pets of any kind are expensive) and the health of your pet, do your research

well depends what you want,
if your inactive and dont like going out much and want something pretty low key think about a rodent or lizard or somethign that wont require you excersice it.
if you want a companion to run and jump and bring places get a dog, or a ccet trained to aleash :) ( i have seen this before)
guinea pigs are great, they become very attached to their owner when played with lots. and gerbils or rats are good, cause they are social and like peoples.
fish are good if you don't really want to do mush more than look feed and change a filter :)
if you want a companion bird then budgies and cockateils are good and not as expensive as the larger parrots. or a finch if you again ust want to lookat them and hear them sing.
anyways.. those are soem ideas.. then there ferrets, deigos, rabbits, mice, frill dragons, hermit crabs, snails, snake... the list goes on and on..
my oly adive is before you buy, make sure you know what your getting yourself into, cause a cute little iguana will grow to be up to 4 feet long :) so reserch and ask your local pet store for advice.

First consider your situation, time, and money that you have to spend with the animal. Then take the time to write that down so people can give you a better idea for pets.

Human nature could make you want to look. Kinda like once you're using down the line and additionally you notice a ineffective animal on the line, no remember how plenty you tell your self "do no longer look" purely once you get upon it you look.

If you are single and work during the day, maybe a cat, as they are self sufficient. The poor dog has to be or should be crated, while you are gone.Dogs require alot of attention.
