Get and run CCleaner, also run disc cleanup and make sure to clear out the most recent restore point and any and all temp files. Ccleaner has the option to delete uninstall programs for updates, this not only makes ones that aren't installed redownload, but it also clears up a bunch of useless crap (hence the name C cleaner which stands for crap cleaner) If you are running XP you can go to microsoft update and go through the list of installed updates and any that show as errors you can get directly from the site.......its also possible the updates that are trying to install fail because they are already installed. If Vista you can do basically the same thing but its more detailed as the update site won't scan it'll force you to use the built-in updater but at least that'll tell you what you have downloaded and what hasn't installed yet. Then you do the same thing, go to the microsoft site and find the direct links to the updates you are having errors with.

If you have Vista, does it flick to black before it asks you to confirm an action -- a security action? Like the Cancel or Allow questions. If so, that's normal... That's a Windows Vista thing. If it's doing it randomly, then no, it's not normal.

it might not be normal.. this can hppn coz of power spike (that's rare chance)
secondly if ur display is set to higher resolution. try changing the resolution to 1024*768 or 800*600 and then chk for the issue
also chk for any magnetic interference near the montir display like speakers etc

I agree with Jimbo, Vista does this alot. If you are not running vista, I would look in a little deeper and probably take it back if it happens alot.

Mine does the same thing when I first turn it on. You want to make sure all your drivers are up to date. Hp has wonderful cust. service. And also you can use hpupdate on your system and also use windows update.

No this is not normal. Take it back where you got it or send it in to HP.

i have a dv2000 series laptop and i have never seen this phenomenon. I think i would demand a replacement if i did experience this.

You really need to worry. Once it goes black it may not come back. LOL
