It's happened - we just stay in the house until it leaves (and we videotape it for parties).

A bear did come out of the woods into my backyard. I live in Rockaway NEw Jersey. I was inside and I thought it was one of the highlights of my life. Now I look for it all the time but hardly ever see it. I keep looking.

Stay inside! There are some woods fairly near my house and coyotes have been spotted in the woods. No bears, though.

It actually happened to me!
I called my husband and he didn't think it was that big, because he only saw the rear end of it, as it was leaving the yard. I found out the next day that my neighbor feeds it, because it was a mother bear, who brings the food back to her cubs. It was pretty scary. I looked out, because my little dog was barking her head off. I whispered for her to get inside, and gasped!

been there done that. every spring our area has problems with a (i assume its just the same one, but its probable more) black bear that wanders down from the blue ridge mountians into fairfax county... which is near dc, so we're not supposed to have bears.

we were told to call animal control if we saw it. it ended up getting hit by a valvo last time i heard about it. i'm sure that car was totalled.

Nothing. Where I live we have a huge backwards and I saw like 3 bears already. I just lock all the doors and tell my mom.

Oh a few things. Either run back into the house or try to make loud noises or offer it some honey. You never know what you might do under those circumstances.

I'd be amazed. Then call the zoo. Bears haven't been in this area for quite some time now.

I would be very happy that I finally moved out of this rat hole of a city that I live in and moved to Maine like I dreamed. Then I'd quickly bring the dogs in!

well, I don't know where YOU live, but where I live, there has been a bear in my backyard. It wasn't scary, really, and they are truthfully more scared of you. So I just stayed inside and brought in the pets.

[I've also almost run into one with my car]

I would definetly not go into my yard. I would watch him from the inside. If he wouldn't go away, or kept coming back alot. I'd call animal control in my local township.
