I've been having awful nightmares lately, and often wake up in tears. most of the time they are about my fiance abandoning me or of deaths in my family. I know they probably represent abandonment issues or something but i'd like to know if there is anything I can do before bed or throughout the day to keep from having these nightmares? I'm usually very disturbed by them for days afterward and really want them gone. any tips would be appreciated.

I know how you feel and I wish I could tell you how to stop these nightmares. Sometimes dreams are related to what has happened to you in the last few days. You are having anxiety and feeling insecure about your fiance and your family. Also sometimes when everything is going really great you can have a problem believing things are so good. You may feel that you might lose the good things you have, so you feel anxious. My suggestions for now will be for you to be very active during the day, lots of activity such as lots of exercise and that sort of thing so by the time you go to bed you are really tired and will sleep soundly. That may help.

I read where all dreams is the brains way of filing and cross referencing information. Some dreams are brief in real time but seem to play out longer, others do last a few more moments. Your dream is short in time but dramtic in the results. You could be dreaming the same dream or just similiar types - Your brain has emotional issues to deal with perhaps if you spoke to your fiance about the abandonment issues you can get the missing information you need to (pardon the pun) put this issue to bed. I am sure you will have restful sleep there after.

You need to consider whether you are facing feelings of dependence. There may be a fear of being left or losing someone, perhaps arising from an actual experience of loss in the past.

If you are an adult facing feelings of abandonment in dream, it may be helpful to recognize that such feelings usually connect with the realization in childhood that if your parents or significant other died or abandoned you, you do not have the skills or maturity to obtain your own needs. Although, as an adult, you might be capable of gaining your needs, such powerful feelings of helplessness, anxiety or sense of abandonment, can be stimulated by any situation reminiscent of the childhood situation that first called them into play. Therefore, it can help to carefully look at your life situation to see what changes are producing these feelings. You also need to decide whether there is real cause for fear, or whether you are suffering anxiety due to past experience.

I've never really had horrific dreams, but sometimes I get freaky psycodelic(sp?) dreams; no, I do not take drugs, or do them, or smoke, or any of that stuff; I just get weird dreams.

What causes your dreams could be any number of things, like, in your case, abandonment issues, or you could just be scared that something might actually happen.
Sometimes it could be what you ate, or something that happened in the past.

When I have my freaky dreams, I usually just drink some milk, warm or not, and maybe eat some chocolate(it works for me!) I've never prayed to God about a dream before, but I'm sure that if you do something of that sort, like tell someone, they might stop for a little while. If they keep coming you could talk to your doctor, or friends.

Be happy. Look at life with a positive attitude, because nightmare reflect the darkest pits of your life. Laugh more, and smile more. Drugs only mask the symptoms. The best way is to join a group, so that you'll never feel alone. If you look at life happily, then nightmares will be a thing of the past!
